Teeth grinding, or bruxism is a stressful condition that affects at least 10% of the population. It normally happens at night during sleep. This makes it hard to identify until the damage has been done.
If left untreated, bruxism can result in gum and jaw problems, severe headaches. It can even lead to premature wear and fracturing of the teeth.
This condition is common in children, and parents will normally hear their child grinding their teeth from time to time. You should realize, however, that teeth grinding in children isn’t the same type of bruxism that occurs in adults. It is somewhat a normal part of a kid’s dental development.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help your child stop grinding their teeth.

- Wait for them to stop– If your child’s teeth are developing, he or she could simply be using teeth grinding as a way of getting used to the new teeth. You can wait for some time before you take on any serious measures to stop the bruxism.
- Visit a pediatric dentist–If the teeth grinding persists, schedule a dental checkup. Here, the dentist can properly diagnose and treat the condition. The dentist may even recommend a personalized mouth guard for your child to wear at night to stop teeth grinding and the residual soreness.
- Help your child deal with stress –Stress is one of the major causes of bruxism. You can prevent this kind of teeth grinding by taking measures to help your child deal with the stress. This can include talking, sports, and other activities.
- Give your child water– Dehydration could be linked to teeth grinding. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water.
Bruxism in children can be distressing. Fortunately, most children eventually outgrow the habit.
Nonetheless, it’s advisable to implement the above measures to help stop the problem and avert effects associated with it.
